BayWa r.e. has completed three self-consumption photovoltaic projects for Merck and Tetra Pak, in the pharmaceutical and food packaging sectors respectively. These projects, located near Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, are part of BayWa’s plan to grow its business in Spain.

PV systems at Merck

BayWa r.e. designed, developed and built a 2.2 MWp ground-mounted photovoltaic system for Merck, a science and technology company, at its pharmaceutical and chemical plants in Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona). The plant covers an area of 10,600 square meters and is capable of generating 2.8 million kWh per year, meeting around 60% of the plant’s energy demand. The project will also reduce CO2 emissions by 800 tonnes a year, contributing to Merck’s ambition to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.

Tetra Pak projects

For Tetra Pak, BayWa r.e. has also completed two self-consumption projects at its production plants in Arganda del Rey (Madrid) and Seville, as part of the leading food processing and packaging company’s energy transition strategy. These projects include a rooftop PV installation and a PV carport with a total capacity of almost 1.3 MW. The rooftop PV installation near Madrid features a unique functionality: the plant covers three buildings and is managed wirelessly from a central point, enabling the system to use excess energy from one building to power the others.

Ana Lopez, Managing Director of Energy Solutions at BayWa r.e. in Spain, and Andrea Grotzke, Global Director of Energy Solutions at BayWa r.e., underlined the company’s commitment to promoting the energy transition of businesses not only in Spain but also on a global scale. The completion of over 1,000 projects in Europe and South-East Asia has enabled BayWa r.e. to strengthen its role in the development of energy solutions for businesses.
