ENGIE recently acquired two biomethane production units in the Dutch provinces of Overijssel and North Holland, specifically in Hardenberg and Alkmaar. These installations represent the Group’s first biomethane operations in the Netherlands, furthering its expansion in the sector.

Production capacity and potential

The newly acquired facilities at Hardenberg and Alkmaar currently have biomethane production capacities of 90 GWh and 47 GWh respectively. ENGIE plans to expand these capacities to 150 GWh at Hardenberg and 94 GWh at Alkmaar, significantly increasing their contribution to overall production.

Consolidation of European assets

These Dutch acquisitions are in addition to ENGIE’s recent acquisitions in the UK, including Ixora Energy Ltd and Rainbarrow Farm, bringing ENGIE’s total generation capacity to 1.1 TWh. These efforts are in line with the Group’s stated objective of achieving annual biomethane production of 10 TWh by 2030.

Committed to the energy transition

Cécile Prévieu, Executive Vice President for Infrastructure at ENGIE, emphasized the importance of these acquisitions: “With these two acquisitions in the Netherlands, we have now extended our biomethane production to a third country in Europe. We plan to continually invest in this renewable, local and sovereign energy source.”

Impact on decarbonizing the economy

ENGIE recognizes the crucial role of biomethane in the energy transition, particularly as a major contributor to the decarbonization of the European economy. The Group’s commitment to biomethane reinforces its global strategy for clean, sustainable energy.

With its new facilities in the Netherlands, ENGIE is taking significant steps to consolidate its position in the biomethane sector in Europe, moving closer to its target of 10 TWh of annual production by 2030.
