The Megaton Moon energy park in Mauritania, initiated by GreenGo Energy, is set to shake up the global energy landscape. With its unique architecture and strategic location, this project promises not only low-cost green energy production, but also considerable socio-economic and industrial development for Mauritania.

Vision and Commitment to the Climate Crisis

GreenGo Energy’s vision, as expressed by CEO Karsten Nielsen, is to tackle the climate crisis quickly and on a massive scale. Megaton Moon aims to produce 1% of the world’s green hydrogen demand by 2050, making a significant contribution to the objectives of the Paris Agreement and to achieving carbon neutrality.

Strategic Planning and Implementation Steps

The project, planned to be implemented in stages, targets hybrid production of 60GW/190TWh ofsolar and wind power, plus 35GW of electrolysis to produce 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year, or 18 million tonnes of green ammonia. First piloting is scheduled for 2028, with completion between 2033 and 2035.

Strengthened partnership with the Mauritanian government

The GreenGo Energy delegation’s meeting with the Mauritanian Minister of Energy marked a significant step towards the realization of the project. The Ministry’s sincere interest in Megaton Moon and the progress ofgreen hydrogen legislation testify to the Mauritanian government’s commitment to this major project.

Mauritania: A Green Hydrogen Hub in the Making

Mauritania is ideally positioned to become a major hub for green hydrogen production. Advantages include excellent solar and wind energy resources, flat terrain and favorable coastal proximity, as well as significantly lower green hydrogen production costs than in Northern Europe.

Transforming Agricultural, Industrial and Urban Development

This project has the potential to transform agricultural, industrial and urban development in Mauritania. By using surplus energy to develop a large-scale agricultural industry in the desert, the project also aims to establish a new green industry. More than 70 million tonnes of desalinated water will be produced annually to support this ambitious development.

Energy and Water Synergy for Prosperous Development

The Megaton Moon project aims not only to improve the project’s economy, but also to enable transformative development for Mauritania. The combination of energy and water resources has the potential to propel Nouakchott and Mauritania into a prosperous development cycle.

Strategic Partnerships and Project Engineering

The development of the project draws on the experience of GreenGo Energy and its partners, such as COWI and New Power Partners, in the design of infrastructure and renewable energy. Close cooperation with the supply chain and offtake partners is crucial to the success of this major project.
Lastly, GreenGo Energy is committed to setting up a major local educational and vocational training program, in partnership with the Zealand Business College in Copenhagen, to support the development of this project.

Megaton Moon is shaping up to be a catalyst for change in Mauritania, offering a model for sustainable development thanks to green energy.
