The renewable energy sector gets a boost with the announcement of the construction of the Buffalo Plains wind farm by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), via its Copenhagen Infrastructure IV (CI IV) fund. This installation, comprising 83 Siemens-Gamesa turbines, represents a capacity of 495MW.

Job creation and economic impact

CIP’s acquisition of Buffalo Plains in 2022 from ABO Wind marks a significant milestone in sustainable development. The project, located in Vulcan County, is expected to create around 250 full-time jobs during its construction phase. Once operational, it will produce enough clean energy to power over 240,000 homes.

Strategic partnership with Amazon

Construction of the project has been entrusted to Borea, a Canadian builder of renewable energies. In addition, Seattle-based Amazon has signed a power purchase agreement to obtain 415MW of power from Buffalo Plains.

CIP’s commitment in North America

Tim Evans, Partner and Head of North America at CIP, expresses his satisfaction at the start of work at Buffalo Plains. According to him, this project illustrates CIP’s ability to successfully complete large-scale, complex infrastructure projects.

Buffalo Plains represents CIP’s second successful investment in Canada, following Travers Solar, the country’s largest solar project. The project is part of a portfolio of over 29GW of renewable energy assets under development, construction or operation in North America.

The Buffalo Plains initiative marks a milestone in the renewable energy sector, not only for its significant contribution to clean energy production, but also for its positive impact on the local economy.
