Namibia approves agreement to develop green hydrogen

Namibia is set to achieve a major ecological feat with the launch of the largest green hydrogen project in sub-Saharan Africa. The Cabinet of the Government of the Republic of Namibia has given the go-ahead for a historic agreement with Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, paving the way for a fully integrated and revolutionary initiative.

The Cabinet of the Government of the Republic of Namibia (GRN) has approved the conclusion of an agreement with Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Hyphen) to oversee the development, implementation and operation of the largest green hydrogen project in sub-Saharan Africa, and the only one to be fully vertically integrated.

10 billion investment

The transformative impact of this project on Namibia and its economy is considerable. Total investment in the project amounts to 10 billion US dollars, roughly equivalent to the country’s annual GDP. Once developed on a large scale, this project should produce 2 million tonnes of green ammonia every year by the end of the decade.

The pioneering Feasibility and Implementation Agreement governs the process of realizing Namibia’s first green hydrogen project, which is the first step in implementing GRN’s broader green hydrogen strategy.
