Lhyfe Bretagne : A new green hydrogen production site

Lhyfe Bretagne, the new green and renewable hydrogen production site, will soon be operational in Brittany. The site will supply the region's transport and industry and contribute to the construction of a hydrogen industry in Brittany. With a daily production capacity of 2 tons, Lhyfe is targeting more than 3 GW of installed capacity by 2030.

Lhyfe has obtained a building permit for its second green and renewable hydrogen production site in Buléon, Morbihan, Brittany. The site, called Lhyfe Bretagne, will be operational in the second half of 2023 and will mainly supply hydrogen for the region’s transport and industrial processes of local companies. The daily production capacity of Lhyfe Bretagne will be 2 tons of green and renewable hydrogen (5 MW). The VHyGO project supported by ADEME is one of the actors of this initiative for the development of the hydrogen sector. Lhyfe aims to have over 3 GW of installed capacity by 2030.

Decarbonizing mobility and industry

Lhyfe aims to decarbonize industry and mobility by producing green and renewable hydrogen. Lhyfe Bretagne will produce green and renewable hydrogen by electrolysis of water from resources and energy sourced nearby. The Buléon site, with an area of 6,800 m2, is located next to a wind farm. The production of hydrogen will be totally decarbonized, without greenhouse gas emissions.

Benefits for Brittany

Lhyfe Bretagne is centrally located to supply Lhyfe’s customers in almost all of Brittany, within a radius of about 150 km, thus respecting the philosophy of short circuit of Lhyfe. The VHyGO project, supported by ADEME, promotes the development of land-based uses as well as maritime and industrial applications of hydrogen. As part of this initiative, Lhyfe Bretagne will supply two refueling stations operated by HyGO in the Lorient area. Eventually, 19 buses and two passenger boats could be powered by hydrogen produced by Lhyfe Bretagne. Lorient Agglomération, which is actively participating in the ecological transition by renewing its fleet of public transport vehicles, aims to have its entire fleet composed of clean vehicles by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

A strong regional dimension

Beyond the decarbonization of uses, this project has a strong regional dimension as it contributes to the construction of a hydrogen industry in Brittany. The production of hydrogen by Lhyfe Bretagne will allow the development of public hydrogen stations in Brittany. The Lhyfe Bretagne project contributes to the development of the local training offer (engineering degree in Energy, Electricity and Hydrogen from the University of Southern Brittany) as well as to the increase in skills of many companies in the hydrogen field.
