In Denmark, Everfuel A/S announces the production of the first volumes of hydrogen at HySynergy in Europe’s largest electrolyzer.

Promising first trials

In Denmark, Everfuel A/S and Crossbridge Energy are jointly developing HySynergy in Fredericia. The plant allowed the production of a small amount of renewable hydrogen which was discharged without causing any environmental damage. The production is based on electricity of renewable origin used to separate the water molecules introduced and extract dihydrogen molecules.

It will be a 20MW installation. However, this first production was realized without any material difficulty. Jacob Krogsgaard, founder and CEO of Everfuel, states:

“The first hydrogen is a major milestone both for Everfuel and for a greener society. We are executing on our promise to bring commercial green hydrogen to market soon, and I am grateful to the project team and partners who worked tirelessly to make this happen on time in the midst of a challenging supply chain market.”

This first step represents a success towards the scale-up of the electrolyser installation. Commercial production is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2023. Everfuel A/S, in Denmark, is still waiting for administrative authorizations.

A final total capacity in 2030 of 1GW

HySynergy is currently the first large-scale PtX installation in Denmark. This is a flagship project in Europe on the way to large-scale hydrogen implementation. This project will increase its test power to 10MW, allowing for numerous tests.

The second phase of HySynergy will develop a tender for the supply of electrolysers. As an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), HySynergy has received Danish funding of DKK 246.3 million. Thus, this grant will finance the construction of the first 100MW section.

The second phase is expected to add another 300MW of capacity in 2025. Renewable hydrogen will reduce up to 500,000 tons of carbon emissions per year from the industry. This reduction corresponds to 11% of the total carbon emissions of the Danish land transport sector in 2020.
