ADNOC begins construction of the first hydrogen refueling station in the Middle East. It will produce clean hydrogen from water using an electrolyzer powered by electricity from a clean grid.

ADNOC Pilot Project: Sustainable Mobility and National Hydrogen Strategy in the United Arab Emirates

ADNOC is testing the station with Toyota and Al-Futtaim Motors, who are providing a fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies and CEO of ADNOC, stressed the importance of decarbonizing the economy. ADNOC has allocated $15 billion to reduce its carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

This pilot project will enable ADNOC to gather essential data on the performance of hydrogen transport technology while developing the hydrogen infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates. The aim is to support the country’s National Hydrogen Strategy, aimed at becoming one of the world’s leading hydrogen producers by 2031.

Operation of the hydrogen station by ADNOC and key partnership with Toyota

Once completed, the hydrogen refueling station will be operated by ADNOC Distribution, while a second station, located in Dubai Golf City, will be equipped with a conventional hydrogen refueling system.

The partnership with Toyota and Al-Futtaim Motors is an important step towards integrating hydrogen into sustainable mobility. As a clean fuel, hydrogen produces no carbon dioxide emissions when used, giving vehicles greater range and faster refuelling times than battery-electric vehicles.

The company is investing significantly in the development of low-carbon solutions and new energies to meet its target of reducing carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
