A visionary partnership: Nel and Bondalti join forces for a green hydrogen revolution

Bondalti, Portugal’s largest chemical company, aims to significantly incorporate green hydrogen into its value chain in order to reduce its carbon footprint. The electrolyser plant, scheduled to start production in early 2026, will play a key role in this strategy by injecting green hydrogen into the natural gas grid. It will also meet long-distance transport needs and provide hydrogen for Bondalti’s internal chemical processes.

The H2 Enable project is in line with the climate and energy objectives set at European level, in particular those of the “Fit for 55” initiative for the chemical sector. Bondalti is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and decarbonizing other sectors that are difficult to tackle. The company has already integrated 40% renewable energy into its operations and is aiming for 100% incorporation by 2030.

The firm order is for alkaline stacks, and Wood will carry out the FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) study. The necessary electrodes will be produced at the Herøya facility in Norway. This is the world’s first fully automated electrolyser production line.
