Public utility Vantaan Energia has selected Elisa Industriq to optimise its upcoming 10 MW battery energy storage system in Rekola. The installation, scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2025, forms part of a broader strategy to diversify energy assets and enhance flexibility within the Finnish electricity system.
An operational lever to support grid stability
The lithium-ion battery in Rekola will deliver capacity equivalent to one hour of usage for 2,000 electric saunas, a common reference in local energy metrics. The aim is to meet peak demand and contribute to grid balancing, particularly in the context of reserve services operated by Fingrid, Finland’s national electricity transmission system operator.
According to Vantaan Energia, the project is part of an integrated energy system based on flexible assets. In addition to adjustable electric heat production, the use of storage solutions is becoming a strategic tool. The company stated that it conducted a competitive selection process to identify a technological partner capable of operating this critical infrastructure.
An algorithmic approach to maximise revenues
Elisa Industriq’s Gridle system, formerly known as Elisa DES, will deliver dynamic, near real-time multi-market operating plans. Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, it enables forecasting of available flexible capacity and the development of the most profitable bidding strategies across electricity wholesale markets and Fingrid’s balancing services.
By integrating Gridle into its trading platform, Vantaan Energia aims to maximise the battery’s profitability while supporting grid stability. The solution enables charge and discharge cycles to be adjusted according to price signals and market constraints. This operational optimisation reinforces the energy company’s position in the development of adaptable infrastructure.
A strategic partnership in energy sector digitalisation
The agreement between the two groups also illustrates Elisa Industriq’s ability to manage both large-scale assets and smaller distributed batteries. Gridle, already deployed in other critical projects, is gaining growing recognition in the Nordic market for its performance under multi-constraint environments.
Optimising storage capacity through software solutions is becoming a key economic lever for electricity producers facing increased market volatility. The Rekola project coincides with another major initiative led by Vantaan Energia, the Varanto site, announced as the world’s largest seasonal thermal energy storage facility.
