Valmet Oyj has received an order from Saica Group (Sociedad Anónima Industrias Celulosa Aragonesa) to supply a biomass boiler and flue gas cleaning system for its plant in El Burgo de Ebro, located in the Zaragoza province, Spain. The order is part of Valmet’s received orders for the second quarter of 2025. The delivery of the installation is scheduled for the end of 2026.
The boiler to be supplied is a Valmet BFB model, utilising bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) technology. This boiler will be capable of producing over 700,000 tonnes of steam annually. By using biomass as a fuel source, the boiler will significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, thus contributing to Saica’s environmental goals, which focus on circular economy and sustainability.
Juan Antonio Meler, Industrial Projects Director at Saica Group, commented that this project is part of their decarbonisation plan and aligns with the company’s core values: “We Care, We Value, We Challenge”. He also specified that the project has received a grant from the Spanish state, as part of the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE), awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism.
Meanwhile, Lauri Pehu-Lehtonen, Vice President of Energy and Circularity at Valmet, emphasised that this order highlights the importance of Valmet’s advanced boiler technology, contributing to the energy transition of its industrial clients towards more sustainable solutions.
A strategic project for Saica Group
The project with Valmet forms part of a broader initiative by Saica Group to reduce its carbon footprint. The installation of this BFB boiler is crucial for meeting the company’s decarbonisation targets. By promoting the use of biomass, a renewable fuel, Saica is enhancing its energy efficiency while reducing its environmental impact. The adoption of this technology fits within the broader drive to reduce industrial emissions across Europe.
The role of Valmet’s technology in the energy transition
The BFB boiler offered by Valmet is a proven technology, utilised in various energy transformation projects. By promoting the use of biomass, Valmet is actively contributing to the decarbonisation of industries in Europe. Its reputation in the sector is built on the reliability and performance of its solutions, which led Saica to award this new contract. The ongoing project is also expected to strengthen the relationship between the two companies, building on the successful cooperation in past projects.
