Hollandse Kust Zuid, the world’s largest offshore wind farm, officially announced its opening today. This marks a major step in the country’s energy transition. This park is the result of collaboration between Vattenfall, BASF and Allianz. It promises to revolutionize clean energy policy in the Netherlands.

Project location and scope

Hollandse Kust Zuid, a monumental project in the North Sea, stretches from 18 to 36 kilometers along the Dutch coast. It houses 139 turbines generating a total of 1.5 GW and will be operational in early 2024.

Vattenfall, a key player in the energy transition, is piloting the project. In addition, Helene Biström, Senior Vice President of Vattenfall’s wind power division, comments: “We aspire to be a leader in the energy transition. Offshore wind is essential for energy security and carbon neutrality. I’m proud of our industrial partnership.”

The commitment of BASF and Allianz

BASF, a leading chemical company, is playing a crucial role by investing heavily in the production of renewable energy. The Dr. Martin Brudermüller, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BASF SE, emphasizes: “Much of the energy produced will reduce BASF’s carbon footprint in Europe. This is our first major investment in renewable energy.

Allianz is also taking a major step towards carbon neutrality by investing in this offshore wind farm. Oliver Bate, CEO of Allianz, says: “We invest our policyholders’ funds in renewable energies and own more than 100 wind and solar farms.”

Preserving marine biodiversity

Hollandse Kust Zuid also stands out for its commitment to biodiversity. Several innovative techniques minimize the impact on marine life, providing shelter and adding artificial reefs to attract more marine life.

This project innovates by using recyclable blades on three turbines, promoting a circular economy. The resin used for these blades will be easier to dissolve after their service life, making them easier to recycle.

A key project for the future of the Netherlands

Hollandse Kust Zuid is essential to Dutch efforts to combat climate change and provide renewable energy for future generations. In 2018, it was named the world’s first subsidy-free wind farm, demonstrating its efficiency and viability.

The park is also connected to the Dutch grid via two offshore substations developed and operated by Dutch TSO TenneT. This approach guarantees standardization and cost savings for wind farm developers.

In short, the inauguration of the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm marks a decisive moment in the Netherlands’ energy transition. It is a testimony to the successful collaboration between industry, government and investors to promote clean, sustainable energy.
