World Energy GH2 Inc. announced that the company has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Nujio’qonik project.

From Wind to Green Hydrogen: New Era of Sustainability with the Nujio’qonik Project

This presentation marks the first comprehensive environmental study in North America for a commercial-scale green hydrogen project. The Nujio’qonik project is scheduled to be built on the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. It will be one of the world’s first large-scale green hydrogen wind power projects, with production starting in 2025.

Completion of the first stages of the project will have an immediate impact on efforts to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) worldwide. The first stages of the project will offset around 850,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. By replacing the equivalent amount of energy produced from coal. The Qalipu First Nation, a key partner in the project, also participated in the environmental assessment process through multiple consultations and a study of traditional land and resource use among members of the Mi’kmaq community of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Sean Leet, Managing Director and CEO of World Energy GH2, says the environmental impact assessment is a key milestone for the Nujio’qonik project. “Over the past few months, we have achieved several key milestones for the Nujio’qonik project.”

“We acquired the Port of Stephenville, a key asset for the production and shipment of green hydrogen and green ammonia; we completed a $50 million investment with our new partner, SK ecoplant, marking the first foreign investment in a Canadian green hydrogen project; we successfully completed the first phase of the province’s tendering process for Crown land; we have made significant progress towards completing our pre-EDF (initial engineering and design phase) and have now submitted a full Environmental Impact Statement. We look forward to the province announcing its decision on the final phase of the Crown lands tendering process later this month, and the province’s response to our request for an Environmental Impact Statement later this fall.”

John Risley, President of World Energy GH2, says this is an important milestone in the development of the Nujio’qonik project and the launch of a new industry. “As we work to build a new clean, renewable energy industry in Atlantic Canada, this is an important step in our progress,” said Risley. Atlantic Canada is ideally situated to be part of the solution, and we need to develop green energy solutions now. Our project is on track to produce initial quantities of green hydrogen in 2025, so Canada has the opportunity to be a forerunner and become a world-class producer, consumer and exporter of green energy. The world desperately needs clean, green energy, and we’re working to make that a reality here in Atlantic Canada.”

The environmental assessment process for the Nujio’qonik project, which was registered with the province in June 2022. It includes 27 studies and plans, as required by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. WEGH2 has been carrying out the necessary studies since early summer 2022.
