Vattenfall builds an offshore wind farm in Germany

Vattenfall is launching an ambitious and environmentally friendly offshore wind project with a capacity of 980 MW to provide more than one million German households with sustainable and renewable electricity by 2027.

In the coming years, Vattenfall wants to build Nordlicht I, an ultra-modern and environmentally friendly offshore wind farm with an installed capacity of 980 megawatts. Subject to the company’s final investment decision, the park could be commissioned by 2027. Once operational, it will be able to produce enough electricity annually to power more than one million average German homes.

 

Location of the park

The Nordlicht I project is located 85 km north of Borkum Island and was awarded to Vattenfall after a tender in 2022. Its name will be inspired by its location in the North Sea and will recall the production of a new non-fossil energy source: “N-7.2” was the standard code used to designate the project but the project team chose a new, more personal name early on.

Vattenfall’s experience in offshore wind power

Vattenfall currently supplies renewable sources such as onshore and offshore wind to German consumers with its 4.2 gigawatts installed, of which 11.3 TWh is produced annually. In Germany, the company has long been at the forefront of clean technologies: Alpha Ventus was the first off-shore wind farm commissioned in 2010 (with EON and EWE). Vattenfall also operates Sandbank and DanTysk with Stadwerke München, which together supply 700,000 households annually
