Valmet Oyj will provide a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) biomass boiler and flue gas handling equipment to Swedish company Kraftringen Energi for a new combined heat and power (CHP) plant. This unit will replace aging infrastructure to ensure the reliability of district heating supply in Örtofta, within the Eslöv municipality.

Increased capacity for Skåne

The new facility, located next to the current plant, will nearly double production capacity in Örtofta, in the Skåne region. With this major investment, Kraftringen Energi will be able to deliver an additional 25 MW of electricity to new consumers. Furthermore, the plant will guarantee increased industrial steam production and a more stable local electricity output.

This order, included in Valmet’s second-quarter 2025 orders received, remains of confidential value. The flue gas handling equipment provided by Valmet will incorporate a heat recovery system, further feeding the district heating network and thereby increasing the overall energy efficiency of the project.

Technology ready for future needs

The system proposed by Valmet includes a bag house filter, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for the removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx), a combustion air humidifier, a flue gas condenser, and a condensate treatment unit. The plant has been designed with future carbon capture technology integration in mind.

Installation work will begin in June 2026, with the plant scheduled to be operational in 2028. This project represents the largest investment in energy production in Skåne in the past decade.

A strategic collaboration for Valmet

For Kraftringen Energi, this project marks a crucial step in replacing older units with more modern technology. “This new facility gives us the opportunity to optimise our production. All of this ensures availability and strengthens the region’s energy security,” said Fredrik Fackler, Business Area Manager for Heating and Cooling at Kraftringen Energi.

Valmet also views this contract as strategic, strengthening its position in the energy plant market. Niina Ollikka, Vice President of Boilers and Gasifier Solutions at Valmet, stated, “This contract is very important as it enables us to provide efficient energy solutions that precisely meet our customers’ needs, while also integrating future carbon capture compatibility.”
