During Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten’s visit to TotalEnergies‘ Antwerp refinery, the company revealed its plans for a second battery storage project at the Feluy site. This follows a similar project launched in May 2023. The new project, with 25 MW of power and 75 MWh of capacity thanks to forty containers of Saft Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion batteries, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. These initiatives, totalling an investment of almost €70 million, are designed to strengthen the resilience of the Belgian power system.

Contributions to renewable energies

These battery storage sites play a crucial role in power grid flexibility, resolving congestion problems and promoting the development of renewable energies. Their ability to compensate for the intermittent nature of renewable energies is essential to the country’s energy future. “We are delighted to announce this new storage project in Feluy, one year after the launch of our project in Antwerp, which will be operational at the end of this year,” said Olivier Jouny of TotalEnergies.

TotalEnergies’ integrated strategy in Belgium

In Belgium, TotalEnergies plays a major role in the entire electricity value chain, serving 900,000 customers and generating electricity via various facilities. The company has developed solar and onshore wind projects in Belgium, with a portfolio of 300 MW, and operates over 10,000 charging points for electric mobility across the country.

For example, TotalEnergies’ battery storage projects in Belgium make a technical contribution to the electricity grid, addressing the intermittency inherent in renewable energies.
