TotalEnergies invests in OranjeWind to produce hydrogen

TotalEnergies acquires a 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, a 795 MW project to produce green hydrogen to decarbonize its European refineries.

TotalEnergies announces the acquisition of a 50% stake in OranjeWind, an offshore wind farm located 53 km off the Dutch coast.
The project, awarded to RWE in 2022, calls for the construction of wind turbines with a total capacity of 795 MW.
TotalEnergies’ share of the project will be dedicated to the production of renewable electricity, which will be used to power 350 MW electrolysers.
This equipment will generate around 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, to replace conventional hydrogen in TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe.

Emissions reduction targets

TotalEnergies is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and is using OranjeWind to achieve this goal.
The green hydrogen produced will replace the fossil hydrogen currently used, reducing CO2 emissions by around 400,000 tonnes a year.
The project also contributes to the goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1+2) by 40% by 2030 compared with 2015.
By 2030, TotalEnergies aims to reduce its total CO2 emissions by 5 million tonnes per year.

Features of the OranjeWind project

OranjeWind was awarded to RWE as part of the Dutch Hollandse Kust West VII tender.
The project will include not only wind turbines, but also electric boilers and battery storage systems to enhance the stability of the Dutch power grid.
Construction will start in 2026, with full commissioning scheduled for early 2028.
