TotalEnergies recently commissioned a solar power plant in Moussoulens, on a 9-hectare site acquired by the Ortec Group, which specializes in industrial site decontamination. The 4.4MWp plant produces over 5.9GWh of low-carbon electricity per year, enough to power 3,600 people.
Economic and environmental impact
The solar power plant avoids 132 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, helping to combat climate change. The project also had a positive economic impact thanks to a participatory financing campaign that raised €550,000 from 63 lenders. This initiative not only facilitated the financing of the project, but also enabled local residents to play an active part in their region’s energy transition.
Partnership and Citizen Participation
The collaboration between TotalEnergies and the Ortec Group was essential to the success of this project. Alexandre Morin, Development Director at TotalEnergies Renouvelables France, stressed the importance of working with industrial players, local authorities and farmers to build the future of electricity production. Ludovic Romero, Director of the Ortec Group’s Environmental Remediation Department, added that giving a second life to former industrial sites is a powerful lever in the fight against soil artificialization and climate change.
TotalEnergies’ Renewable Energies activities in the Aude region
TotalEnergies currently operates 17 renewable energy production sites in the Aude department, including wind, solar and hydroelectric facilities. With a cumulative capacity of almost 76MW at the end of March 2024, these sites produce around 131GWh of green electricity annually, equivalent to the annual consumption of 76,000 inhabitants.
TotalEnergies’ Commitment and Vision
Present in over 130 countries, TotalEnergies is committed to providing clean, reliable and affordable energy. Our 105,000 employees are working for a sustainable energy future, integrating sustainable development at the heart of their projects and operations. The Moussoulens solar power plant illustrates this vision, transforming polluted land into a source of renewable energy while involving the local community in the energy transition. The Moussoulens solar power plant is an emblematic example of how brownfield sites can be rehabilitated to generate sustainable energy and stimulate the local economy. This project shows how innovation and cooperation can transform environmental challenges into economic and social opportunities.
