TotalEnergies and RWE have entered into a strategic agreement to each acquire a 50% stake in two offshore wind projects located in the North Sea. These projects, identified as N-9.1 and N-9.2, have a combined capacity of 4 GW and are situated approximately 110 km off the German coast. Awarded to RWE in August 2024, these wind farms benefit from initial licenses of 25 years, renewable up to 35 years.

The two projects add to TotalEnergies’ existing concessions, including N-12.1, N-11.2, and O-2.2. This expansion allows TotalEnergies to leverage the synergies of its German offshore wind hub, totaling a capacity of 6.5 GW. Cost optimization for construction and operation is also planned through this asset consolidation.

Strengthening the Partnership between TotalEnergies and RWE

Olivier Jouny, Renewable Director at TotalEnergies, expressed his satisfaction with the strengthened partnership with RWE, a major player in renewable energy in Germany. He emphasized that this collaboration will enable TotalEnergies to provide green electricity essential for decarbonizing the German energy and industrial sectors.

Meanwhile, Sven Utermöhlen, Offshore Wind Managing Director at RWE, welcomed the entry of TotalEnergies as a partner. He mentioned that TotalEnergies’ expertise, already demonstrated in the OranjeWind project in the Netherlands, will be a valuable asset for the realization of the new wind farms in the North Sea. RWE highlighted its extensive experience in the offshore wind industry, essential for the success of these initiatives.

Preliminary Studies and Planned Commissioning

Detailed studies on the marine environment, subsoil, as well as wind and oceanographic conditions, have been conducted by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). These analyses are crucial for the planning and construction of the wind farms, which are scheduled to be commissioned in 2031 and 2032, respectively.

TotalEnergies aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To do so, the company is developing a diversified portfolio of renewable assets, including solar, onshore and offshore wind, as well as flexible solutions such as combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) and energy storage. By mid-2024, TotalEnergies already has a renewable electricity production capacity of 24 GW, with the goal of reaching 35 GW by 2025 and net electricity production of over 100 TWh by 2030.

TotalEnergies’ Offshore Wind Portfolio

TotalEnergies’ offshore wind portfolio includes projects with a total gross capacity of over 17 GW, primarily located in Europe and Asia. These projects include wind farms under development in the United Kingdom, South Korea, Taiwan, France, the United States, and the Netherlands. The collaboration with RWE on the N-9.1 and N-9.2 projects in Germany further strengthens TotalEnergies’ presence in the European offshore wind market.

These initiatives are part of a global strategy aimed at optimizing renewable energy production while ensuring 24-hour availability. The focus is on cost competitiveness and operational efficiency, enabling TotalEnergies to meet the growing demands for sustainability and energy transition.
