As part of the Projet Régional d’Intervention Urgente dans le Secteur de l’Energie Solaire (RESPITE), a new photovoltaic installation is planned in Dapaong, in the Savanes region of Togo. The RESPITE project’s Regional Coordination Unit, based in Monrovia, Liberia, has opened this international call for tenders, which will run until June 4, 2024. The project includes the design, supply and installation of a 25 MWp power plant, supported by a 40 MWh battery storage system.

Technical details and project objectives

Once completed, the plant will supply power to at least 60 communities in the Savanes region, incorporating an evacuation line to ensure efficient distribution. The development of this energy infrastructure, scheduled for completion in twelve to sixteen months, reflects Togo’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy production capacity and improving and securing access to electricity in rural areas.

Financing and regional impact

Funded by the International Development Association (IDA), the concessionary arm of the World Bank Group, this project is part of a wider initiative to deploy photovoltaic systems with battery storage in four sub-Saharan countries, including Liberia, Sierra Leone and Chad. These efforts are supported by an overall financing package of $311 million released by the World Bank in 2023, aimed at increasing regional solar capacity to around 106 MWp and expanding 41 MW of hydropower capacity.
