Energy Plug Technologies Corp., Malahat Battery Technology Corp. and Quantum eMotion Corp. have signed a joint development agreement to design and commercialise cyber-resilient energy storage and defence systems secured with quantum technology. The partnership aims to protect critical national and industrial infrastructure from post-quantum and advanced cyber threats.

Applications in defence and smart grid sectors

The agreement includes the creation of secured Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for Arctic military installations and remote bases. Portable systems for deployed personnel and quantum-encrypted smart grids for Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure are also planned. All solutions will be developed under Canadian cybersecurity frameworks.

The initiative includes a NATO-aligned defence project in collaboration with a major global defence company. The identity of this partner remains undisclosed, but the consortium indicated the technology will address strategic defence and energy security priorities in sensitive infrastructure environments.

Integrating quantum technologies into energy infrastructure

At the centre of the initiative is Quantum eMotion’s QRNG2 chip, based on quantum tunnelling effects, which produces hardware-level high-speed randomness. It is supported by the QxEaaS platform, enabling on-demand entropy for secure communications and distributed system control.

These components will be embedded in Energy Plug and Malahat Battery Technology’s energy platforms, creating a quantum-resilient security layer across embedded hardware, edge devices and cloud environments. The configuration aims to enhance operational resilience in decentralised power systems facing sophisticated cyber threats.

Central role of Indigenous communities in manufacturing

Malahat Battery Technology, an Indigenous-led company affiliated with the Malahat Nation, will lead system production and manage Indigenous involvement in energy and defence programmes.

The integration of quantum-grade cybersecurity into energy systems positions Energy Plug among the first energy technology firms to operationalise quantum security in distributed infrastructure, setting a benchmark for reliability in a sector where resilience is increasingly critical.
