The Sunstone Solar project, developed by Pine Gate Renewables, recently received its final approval from the Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC). This decision marks the conclusion of a rigorous evaluation and public engagement process conducted by the state, officially authorizing the launch of this ambitious project.

With a capacity of 1,200 MW for solar production and 1,200 MW for energy storage, Sunstone Solar will become the largest project of its kind in the United States. The facility will connect to the Bonneville Power Administration system via the Umatilla Electric Cooperative. Engineering and procurement will begin in 2025, followed by phased construction scheduled for 2026.

A Model of Collaboration with Local Communities

To address local concerns, Pine Gate Renewables worked closely with Morrow County and agricultural organizations to minimize the project’s impact on the agricultural economy. An innovative initiative plans to invest over one thousand dollars per project acre into a county-managed fund aimed at supporting agricultural programs and strengthening the resilience of local wheat farms.

According to Ken Grieb, a farmer and landowner involved in the project, this approach reflects a thoughtful and collaborative way of developing large-scale energy infrastructure. “The project will bring crucial economic opportunities to the local community,” he stated.

Political and Regulatory Support

The approval of Sunstone Solar comes in a favorable political context for energy innovation. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden hailed the project as a key solution in the fight against the climate crisis. He emphasized that this type of initiative is supported by federal investments from the Inflation Reduction Act, which promotes neutral and innovative technological solutions.

Ben Catt, CEO of Pine Gate Renewables, highlighted the importance of Oregon’s highly demanding permitting process. “This unanimous approval reflects our commitment to stakeholders to ensure a win-win outcome for the state and the Morrow County community,” he said.

Toward Sustainable Energy Transition

This project is part of a broader strategy to increase the share of renewable energy in the United States. Pine Gate Renewables already owns 17 other solar projects in Oregon. With Sunstone Solar, the company demonstrates its ability to integrate energy development with community resilience, strengthening the long-term viability of clean energy.

By acquiring the project from Gallatin Power Partners in 2022, Pine Gate Renewables also reinforces its role as a leader in the renewable energy sector. This project could serve as a model for other large-scale initiatives across the country.
