The African Union, through its Deputy Secretary General, urges investment and action to develop geothermal energy.
An energy potential
The African Union, on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, chose as the theme of the Ambassadors’ Ball: “Our Africa, Our Future”. The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, thanked the Permanent Representative of the African Union for her role in promoting democracy. It also stressed that in this period of global energy crisis, the need to make commitments to Africa.
Thus, African countries, rich in energy resources, have an enormous potential for energy transition. Indeed, this potential is exercised from hydrogen to geothermal energy. It is also a question of transforming energy into a driving force for the implementation of sustainable development objectives.
Taxing gas and oil
However, at the regional level, funding needs require effective and transparent institutions. Responses must be tailored to the specific challenges of each country with regulatory frameworks that favor foreign direct investment. To do this, it is necessary to rely on the African continental free trade area with exceptional taxes on oil and gas companies.
The aim is to direct the revenues generated towards programs to alleviate the current crisis and invest in employment. In addition, disaster risk management needs to be taken into account, especially in the face of climate change. The continent needs a suitable architecture to achieve the objectives of Agenda 2063.
