India’s largest renewable energy solutions provider, Suzlon Group, recently announced an order to supply 13 wind turbines with a rated capacity of 3 MW each for a 39 MW wind power project. The project will be located in Thalaikattupuram, Tuticorin in the state of Tamil Nadu, and will be carried out on behalf of First Energy 5 Private Limited, a subsidiary of the Thermax Group.

Provide electricity to 32,000 homes

The project will use the S144 wind turbine of the 3 MW series, with a rotor diameter of 144 meters. This wind turbine is designed to be used in low wind speed sites and to improve energy efficiency, suitable for all wind regimes in India. With a generating capacity of 3.15 MW, the S144 is the largest wind turbine in India and will be able to operate at a hub height of 140 meters to 160 meters.

The Thalaikattupuram project will be completed in 2024 and will provide power to a group of captive customers of First Energy 5 Private Limited. It is estimated that this project will be able to provide electricity to about 32,000 homes and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.26 lakh tons per year.

Suzlon to use S144 wind turbines

As the wind turbine supplier, Suzlon will oversee the installation and commissioning of the project, as well as provide full post-commissioning maintenance and operations services. This order is part of a 100 MW hybrid wind-solar project of First Energy 5 Private Limited.

Suzlon’s 3 MW wind turbine series marks a significant milestone for the company and the wind energy sector in India. This series is designed to increase generation and reduce energy costs. With up to 85-90% local content in its mass production launch, this series demonstrates Suzlon’s commitment to innovation and self-sufficiency.
