Sungrow, world leader in photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, has entered into a strategic partnership with Larsen & Toubro to supply 165 MW of photovoltaic inverters and 160 MW/760 MWh of energy storage systems for the AMAALA project, a prestigious destination in Saudi Arabia. This partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and China’s Belt and Road (New Silk Roads) initiative, marking a key moment in the development of sustainable energy.

Objectives and impacts of the AMAALA project

The AMAALA project, developed and led by the EDF Group and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), aims to become the second largest off-grid energy storage initiative in the world. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the project will provide uninterrupted green energy 24/7 with zero carbon emissions, moving Saudi Arabia closer to carbon neutrality. Located along the Red Sea coast, AMAALA covers 4,155 square kilometers and will include 29 hotels, 3,900 rooms, and over 1,200 luxury villas, apartments and residential homes.

Innovation and technology at the heart of the project

Sungrow will provide innovative solar energy storage solutions, including the construction of the world’s largest 10 MW demonstration platform. Advanced simulation models such as Hil semi-physics, DigSilent and PSCAD will be used to test the reliability of the system in various scenarios, thus reinforcing the quality and stability of the power supplied. The project is expected to generate annual capacity of 410 million kilowatt-hours, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by almost 500,000 tonnes a year.

Economic and social contributions

In addition to its environmental benefits, the AMAALA project will create over 50,000 jobs and contribute 11 billion riyals to Saudi Arabia’s GDP.

Mr. T Madhava Das, Larsen & Toubro’s Executive Director and Senior Vice President (Utilities), said, “We are delighted to be working with Sungrow again on the AMAALA project. With their state-of-the-art energy storage solutions and revolutionary 10 MW demonstration platform, we anticipate exceptional execution and optimal quality, ensuring sustainable water use within the destination.”

Future prospects

This strategic partnership between Sungrow and Larsen & Toubro strengthens Saudi Arabia’s position as a world leader in renewable energies. By aligning the objectives of Vision 2030 and the Belt and Road initiative, the AMAALA project represents an important step towards a sustainable and resilient energy future.
