Chinese supplier Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd. has announced the commissioning of the first half of the 200 MW/800 MWh battery storage project developed with ENGIE in Belgium. Located in Vilvoorde, this project represents the largest energy storage installation in mainland Europe in terms of capacity. It is based on 320 units of Sungrow’s PowerTitan solution.
A two-phase project of equal scale
The second half of the project, corresponding to an additional 400 MWh, is expected to be connected to the grid by the end of 2025. Once completed, the site will be able to supply up to 96,000 households by absorbing electricity surpluses during certain periods and releasing them during peaks in consumption. The development of the Vilvoorde site follows a strategy to optimise the electricity grid as infrastructure adapts to intermittent production from renewable sources.
Liquid-cooled technology ensures reliability
The PowerTitan units deployed on site feature liquid cooling technology that maintains a stable and safe temperature for the batteries. Their compact design facilitates installation in limited spaces and accelerates commissioning timelines. According to Sungrow, this approach ensures safety, efficiency, and economies of scale on large infrastructure projects.
ENGIE focuses on grid flexibility
The project is designed to enhance the flexibility of Belgium’s electricity system by providing rapid-response solutions to demand fluctuations. ENGIE, the site operator, highlighted the central role of industrial collaboration in the swift execution of the project. The commissioning of the first segment was made possible through coordination between local technical teams and Sungrow engineers.
Reinforced industrial presence in Benelux
Sungrow has strengthened its position in the Benelux region with a dedicated team based in Amsterdam, including a research and development centre. The company actively participates in professional sector events and hosts its own technical gatherings. This local presence enables responsive after-sales service and reinforces commercial partnerships in the storage and grid integration sector.
