Subsea 7 S.A., a Luxembourg-based company specialising in offshore engineering services, has announced the award of a sizeable contract by Shell for the development of the Aphrodite gas field, located in Block 5a offshore Trinidad and Tobago. The project involves the transport and installation of subsea equipment at depths of up to 290 metres.

Strategic deployment in deepwater

Project management and engineering activities will begin immediately from Subsea7’s offices in Houston, Texas. Offshore operations are planned for 2027, according to the company’s announcement on June 9. No specific value for the contract has been disclosed, though it has been described by the company as “sizeable,” a term typically indicating a range between $50mn and $150mn.

The Aphrodite field marks a new development for Shell in Trinidad and Tobago’s maritime zone, a region historically important for its gas operations. For Subsea7, the contract aligns with its strategy of expanding operations in the Caribbean and highlights its ability to deliver projects in complex environments.

Regional outlook and projected logistics

Craig Broussard, Senior Vice President for Subsea7 Gulf of Mexico, stated that early engagement with Shell helped “build trust and enhance operational performance.” He added that the award reflects Subsea7’s growing presence in the region while underlining the emphasis placed on supporting local talent and resources.

Subsea7 did not specify which vessels or technical means will be mobilised for the offshore execution, though the company operates a fleet dedicated to subsea installations in midwater and deepwater conditions. It also did not confirm whether a local base would be developed in Trinidad and Tobago for this project.
