SSE Renewables, a leading renewable energy developer, owner and operator, has submitted an application for a Coastal Survey Licence to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in Ireland.

The license will facilitate survey work for a possible new offshore wind farm in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Tarbert, County Kerry. This is an important milestone for the company as it marks its first offshore wind project off the west coast of Ireland.

The surveys will provide critical information on the prevailing environmental and weather-ocean conditions in the shoreline survey set area, which is at least 13 km offshore. These investigations will include geophysical, geotechnical and environmental data. They will help SSE Renewables to understand the feasibility of an offshore wind project in the region. The project has the potential to produce up to 1GW of clean, renewable energy.

SSE Renewables continues its renewable energy development strategy in Ireland with a potential 1GW project

SSE Renewables is an experienced developer with an ambitious Irish offshore wind pipeline of up to 4GW, including the Arklow Bank Wind Park 2 project off the Wicklow coast, the Celtic Sea Array project and the Setanta Wind Park project off the south and northeast coast of Ireland.

The company is equipped to undertake this project thanks to its experience in the development of the Ossian project in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland, one of the world’s largest offshore floating wind developments.

According to Martin Sweeney, SSE Renewables’ Senior Project Manager for Blue Seas Development (Ireland), “Our offshore wind farm development project off the coast of Tarbert, County Kerry, is a natural next step in our renewable ambitions for Ireland. Pursuing development opportunities off the west coast is part of our long-term strategy for offshore wind energy in Ireland. The selection of this site off the Tarbert coast allows us to leverage SSE’s existing energy infrastructure in North Kerry and maximize the use of complementary technologies.”
