South Korea Launches 96 MW Offshore Wind Farm Led by CIP and SK Innovation

The Jeonnam 1 wind farm, with a capacity of 96 MW, marks a first for South Korea in privately-led offshore projects. By 2025, it will supply green electricity to 60,000 households, showcasing an innovative energy partnership model.

The Jeonnam 1 Offshore Wind Farm, located in Shinan County off South Korea’s southwest coast, has reached a major milestone with the complete installation of its turbines. This 96-megawatt (MW) project is the first large-scale offshore wind farm fully developed by private entities in the country.

International Cooperation Driving Energy Progress

The project, developed through a collaboration between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and SK Innovation E&S, represents a significant step forward in South Korea’s energy transition. Copenhagen Offshore Partners, CIP’s exclusive partner for offshore wind projects, managed the development activities.

The turbine installation, which began in September 2024, was completed on December 18. This achievement paves the way for commercial operations expected in the first half of 2025. Once fully operational, Jeonnam 1 will provide clean and sustainable energy capable of powering approximately 60,000 South Korean households.

A Model for Future Renewable Energy Projects

Unlike traditional energy projects often driven by public entities, Jeonnam 1 is entirely funded and led by private stakeholders. This initiative reflects a significant shift in South Korea’s approach to renewable energy development, highlighting innovative financing models and strategic partnerships.

In addition to its economic scope, the project’s strategic location benefits from favorable wind conditions, maximizing its energy output. It is also viewed as a key driver in the national effort to diversify energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.
