Sørlige Nordsjø II, an area located in the North Sea, is expected to host an offshore wind farm. A consortium of RWE Renewables, Equinor and Hydro REIN, signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Windport AS.

Developing wind power in the Sørlige Nordsjø II area

This project will be located in the Sørlige Nordsjø II area. The agreement with Windport is for the provision of port facilities to support the development and construction phase of the park. However, the agreement with Winport does not cover the basic operation and maintenance facilities.

In addition, the parties wish to develop this park on an industrial scale. However, it was agreed that this possibility should be evaluated to validate its feasibility.

The installation of the offshore wind farm is part of the Norwegian government’s energy strategy. In fact, the latter had announced an investment plan for the development of offshore wind power. He had thus given the objective of allocating areas to produce 30 GW by 2040. Part of the energy produced will be exported to neighboring countries.

The project is seen as promising. Arne Eik, project manager of Equinor’s Sørlige Nordsjø II project, says:

“The North Sea has some of the best wind resources in the world. A large-scale offshore wind farm in Sørlige Nordsjø could play a key role in the expansion of the North Sea as an offshore energy hub and create new industrial opportunities.”

RWE supports the importance of the development of offshore wind power for the success of the energy transition in Europe. The company wishes to contribute to the evolution of this energy source through its expertise and knowledge in the field.

Thus, it says it wants to support Norway to achieve the goals set for offshore wind. RWE Renewables also highlights the proactivity and efficiency of Windport and the municipalities in the region. These elements are crucial for the realization of the project and an optimal collaboration.

In addition, the project opens up more business opportunities for the southern part of Norway.
