On March 13, Europe reached an unprecedented peak in energy production, with a combined 186 GW of solar and wind generation capacity in one hour. According to data from WindEurope and the UK system, wind power generated 121 GW, while solar power produced 61 GW. This unprecedented increase in green energy production in Europe is a positive sign of the energy transition underway on the continent.
A turning point for wind energy
Germany, which had a combined generation of 57 GW, experienced two hours of negative prices, indicating a possible reduction in wind generation especially during peak solar production. Despite this, wind generation continued to grow, reaching over 3 TWh for the first time in one day. According to S&P Global data, the average price for wind power in Germany was 97.55 EUR/MWh ($105/MWh) on March 13.
Solar production in Europe
Solar power generation also hit an all-time high, with an average price of EUR 85.26/MWh, according to S&P Global data. With an installed capacity of 209 GW of solar panels in the EU, solar energy continues to be an important source of green energy production throughout Europe.
The 500 GW renewable energy milestone is approaching
With nearly 500 GW of installed wind and solar capacity across Europe scheduled for this summer, the transition to renewable energy sources continues. WindEurope and SolarPowerEurope estimate that there will be approximately 255 GW of installed wind capacity across Europe by the end of 2022, and 209 GW of installed solar capacity in the EU.
