Skyborn Sweden (Skyborn) recently submitted a permit application to the Swedish government and the Land and Environment Court for the construction of the 3,000 MW Polargrund offshore wind farm. Located 35 kilometers south of Kalix and Haparanda, the project is expected to generate up to 10 TWh of fossil-free electricity once completed. This clean energy will be sufficient to power more than seven percent of Sweden‘s current electricity consumption.

A key project for Norrbotten

The Polargrund offshore wind farm is seen as a key project to meet the growing demand for electricity in the Norrbotten region, where industries are expanding rapidly and turning to cleaner operations. Forecasts indicate an unprecedented 800% increase in the region’s electricity needs. Niclas Broman, CEO of Skyborn Sweden, says: “Polargrund Offshore is a key project in realizing Norrbotten’s expansive business development plans and in enabling Sweden to move towards net zero emissions. As the developer of Sweden’s northernmost offshore wind farm, we are committed to meeting the unique challenges of building a project of this scale in an Arctic environment.”

A national need for green electricity

Sweden’s electricity needs are set to at least double in the coming decades, mainly due to the electrification of heavy industries across the country. Access to clean, reliable electricity is essential for these industries to achieve their sustainability goals. With the Polargrund project, Skyborn reinforces its commitment to a robust Swedish energy system. The company’s Swedish portfolio now includes four offshore wind farms with a combined annual production potential of around 40 TWh.

Polargrund project details

The Polargrund offshore wind farm boasts an impressive capacity of 3,000 MW and is estimated to produce between 9 and 10 TWh of electricity per year, or 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. It will be located in the territorial waters of the municipality of Kalix and in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone, around 35 kilometers south of Kalix.

The permit application was submitted in accordance with the Environmental Code and the Swedish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Act.

This project is part of a broader vision of energy transition in Sweden, aimed at replacing fossil fuels with renewable alternatives. This positions Skyborn Sweden as a major player in the realization of these national ambitions.

Polargrund’s success will depend on many factors, including regulatory approvals, financial investment, and collaboration with local communities and stakeholders. If these challenges are overcome, Polargrund could become a model of sustainable development in the offshore wind energy sector.

Completion of this project will represent a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and meeting Sweden’s climate targets. By providing large-scale renewable energy, Polargrund will contribute to a greener, more resilient economy.
