Shell invests in Rosmari-Marjoraim

SSB, a Shell subsidiary, and PETRONAS will jointly develop the Rosmari and Marjoraim gas fields in Malaysia.

Shell, through its subsidiary SSB, and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd have made a final investment decision (FID). Together they will develop the Rosmari-Marjoram gas project.

Shell’s Rosmari-Marjolam Project

The Rosmari and Marjolam fields are deepwater sour gas deposits discovered in 2014. They are located 220 km off the coast of Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia. Rosmari-Marjolam is therefore a strategic project to ensure a sustainable gas supply to the PETRONAS LNG complex.

The project includes an offshore platform as well as an onshore gas plant in Bintulu. In addition, the infrastructure of this plant will include one of the longest wet sour offshore pipelines in the world. It will extend over 200 km.

The Rosmari-Marjoram project is designed to produce 800 million MMscf/d. Gas production is expected to begin in 2026, according to Shell.

The Rosmari-Marjoram onshore gas plant is therefore the largest onshore SSB project in Sarawak since the construction of the Bintulu Crude Oil Terminal (BCOT) and the Bintulu Integrated Facility (BIF) in the late 1970s.

A sustainable gas supply

In addition, the Rosmari-Marjoram development will be powered primarily by renewable energy. The offshore platform will use energy from 240 solar panels. As for the onshore plant, it will be connected to the Sarawak grid system which is mainly powered by hydroelectric plants.

Zoe Yujnovich, Shell’s Director of Upstream, says:

“Rosmari-Marjoram will contribute to providing a safe and reliable energy supply in a responsible and efficient manner […] This demonstrates our commitment to investing in our Powering Progress strategy. This strategy aims to generate value and reduce emissions by using renewable energy.”

Ivan Tan, National President and Upstream Vice President of Malaysia, adds:

“The support and partnership of PETRONAS and the Sarawak government is critical to achieving this important milestone with Rosmari-Marjoram. Shell has a long and proud history in Sarawak. We look forward to further contributing to the economic growth of Sarawak and Malaysia by investing in competitive and resilient projects.”
