Shanghai Electric finalised the signing of phase two of the Parau photovoltaic project with a capacity of 342 megawatts on October 1 with Israeli company Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd. The project, located in Romania, marks a significant step in the Chinese company’s expansion in the Central and Eastern European energy market. It is the fourth solar installation developed by Shanghai Electric in the country.

A strengthened strategic partnership in Eastern Europe

The project is designed to supply electricity to residential and commercial sectors, aligning with Romania’s strategy to diversify its energy sources. This new phase follows the successful commissioning of the 91.4 MW first stage, also delivered by Shanghai Electric, which currently powers around 70,000 households.

With this new agreement, the combined capacity of Shanghai Electric’s Romanian projects reaches approximately 550 MW. In addition to the two Parau phases, the company also delivered the 56 MW Schultu photovoltaic project, which entered its warranty period in June, and is currently building the 60 MW Ovidi site, signed in January.

Coordinated expansion with institutional stakeholders

On the day of the signing, Wu Lei, Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, held meetings with several political and industrial representatives in Romania, including the Chinese Ambassador in Bucharest and the President of the Romanian Energy Commission. These discussions focused on potential cooperation in energy storage, gas turbines, and electricity transmission networks.

Talks were also held with executives from Austria’s OMV Group to explore future synergies in the regional energy sector. These meetings reflect Shanghai Electric’s ambition to extend its commercial partnerships beyond the Romanian market.

A portfolio structured around EPC contracts

The projects carried out by Shanghai Electric in Romania are primarily implemented under engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts. This model enables the company to deliver turnkey installations while leveraging its technological expertise. All projects are supervised directly from the group’s headquarters, coordinating local operations with partners such as Econergy.

The collaboration between Shanghai Electric and Econergy aims to ensure on-time delivery and optimise the commissioning of Parau Phase II. According to Econergy, Shanghai Electric was selected for its ability to execute large-scale projects with technical reliability and efficiency.
