German energy producer RWE AG has launched the construction of a new 22.8 megawatt (MW) onshore wind farm near Papenhagen, in the Vorpommern-Rügen district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This project follows the company’s success in the tender organised by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) at the end of last year.

A project aimed at strengthening regional energy supply

The future facility will consist of four wind turbines with a total capacity of 22.8 MW. Commissioning is scheduled for mid-2026. According to RWE, the new wind farm will supply electricity to around 20,000 households. In parallel, a fifth turbine is under construction nearby by RWE on behalf of a project partner whose identity has not been disclosed.

The expansion of onshore wind activity in Germany is considered strategic for RWE, which is continuing its regional development without providing further details on construction costs or the suppliers involved in the project.

Financial participation to local communities

As part of the project, RWE has indicated that it will voluntarily pay 0.2 euro cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) produced to local communities. This contribution could represent up to EUR130,000 ($139,000) per year for the municipality of Papenhagen and surrounding areas, according to estimates provided by the company.

Katja Wünschel, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, stated: “We are continuing to accelerate the expansion of wind energy in Germany and strengthening our fleet in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania,” during an official company communication.

RWE has not specified whether additional wind projects will be launched nearby in the coming months, nor if power purchase agreements have already been signed for the future production of the wind farm.
