QatarEnergy has awarded Samsung C&T Corporation an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project intended for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City. The project, with a capacity to capture 4.1 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, positions Qatar as one of the global leaders in large-scale carbon capture projects.
A Strategic Partnership with Samsung C&T
The award of this contract marks a significant milestone for QatarEnergy, enhancing its capabilities in carbon capture while solidifying its strategic partnership with Samsung C&T. The South Korean company, specializing in engineering and construction, will be tasked with delivering this key infrastructure to support LNG operations in Ras Laffan. This project is part of a series of collaborations aimed at strengthening QatarEnergy’s industrial capabilities while meeting the increasing demand for carbon emission reductions.
Saad Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, emphasized that this project is an integral part of the company’s broader strategy to minimize the environmental impact of its operations while ensuring the reliable and affordable supply of energy. He added that the project represents an important step in Qatar’s efforts to achieve its climate goals, including a broader target to capture over 11 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2035.
Additional Projects in Development
QatarEnergy is also advancing other carbon capture initiatives. In addition to the new contract with Samsung C&T, two ongoing projects for the North Field East and North Field South expansions will capture 2.1 MTPA and 1.2 MTPA of CO₂, respectively. These projects complement the first carbon capture project launched by QatarEnergy in 2019, with a capacity of 2.2 MTPA.
This integrated development aims to support QatarEnergy’s ambitions in reducing emissions while addressing the growing global demand for LNG. QatarEnergy is committed to deploying carbon capture technologies in all its new LNG projects, ensuring the sustainability of its operations while reducing their carbon footprint.
