Ohmium and SwitcH2 Have Finalized a 300 MW Floating Project

Ohmium and SwitcH2 have finalized the development of a 300 MW green ammonia floating production project, located off the southern coast of Europe. This innovative project, based on proven Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) technologies, will integrate 300 MW of Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzer solutions aboard SwitcH2’s 268-meter FPSO vessel. Once completed, the floating site will have an annual production capacity of up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia, sufficient to fuel multiple oceangoing vessels for a full year.

Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzers will utilize offshore solar and wind energy, as well as treated seawater, to produce green hydrogen. This hydrogen will then be injected into an onboard ammonia synthesis unit, and the final product will be transferred to an ammonia carrier for distribution to buyers. Supported by the Dutch government and having received an in-principle approval for its design from the Norwegian certification agency DNV, the project anticipates green ammonia production by 2029.

“We are pleased to have Ohmium join us in making this pioneering project possible,” said Bob Rietveldt, director and co-founder of SwitcH2. “Ohmium’s compact, hyper modular PEM electrolyzers are ideally suited for the space-constrained FPSO setting. Their high efficiency and standardized design enable flexible and rapid installation at scale.”

Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, added: “We are thrilled to be part of this cutting-edge and transformative project. We appreciate the expertise that the SwitcH2 partnership brings to offshore floating production and their vision in leveraging renewables and green hydrogen for the creation of green ammonia. The green ammonia market is booming and is an essential source of clean fuel for the global maritime industry. Ohmium looks forward to collaborating with SwitcH2 to meet this demand.”
