Odense in Højby is home to a Nordic Solar solar park project focused on biodiversity and setting a precedent for future parks.

The Odense Project

Odense is a project with an annual capacity of 32MWp that will supply the equivalent of 11,000 homes. This project, in collaboration with GreenGo Energy Group, is targeting a total portfolio of over 250 MWp. The total investment amounts to more than €150 million over the next three to five years.

The solar park is only the first step in this project. Hedges will surround the site of Højby. Thus, they will protect the park from public view.

In addition, several ponds with tree trunks will ensure tranquility around the solar cells, for the benefit of wildlife. The consulting firm Mols Consulting is responsible for the work on biodiversity in the solar park. The Odense project is part of the municipality’s green energy expansion strategy.

Biodiversity at the heart of the concerns

For example, Tim Vermund, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Climate and Environment, states:

“We have high ambitions for the green transition in Odense, and all parties in the city council support the agreement that Odense must be climate neutral. by 2030. The new solar park in Højby will contribute to this. And, of course, I am delighted that the project focuses on biodiversity so that the solar park will also benefit wildlife.”

The demand for solar energy is constantly increasing. The need for large tracts of land is simultaneously increasing.

The Odense solar park corresponds to the need to put the maintenance of biodiversity at the heart of the installations. This need is particularly noticeable in this region of Fionie, commonly known as the garden of Denmark. It is estimated that only 2% of the country’s agricultural land will be needed to cover the electricity consumption by solar energy.

Work on the Højby solar park will start in November 2022. In addition, the solar park should be ready for operation in 2023. Nordic Solar is currently completing the construction of a solar park on Als with a biodiversity aspect.
