The Norwich substation could benefit from a battery storage system proposed by EDF Renewables.

A storage system

The Norwich substation is located between Dunston and Swainsthorpe in the United Kingdom. EDF Renewables UK has announced plans to develop a 114MW battery energy storage system south of the substation. Thus, the company starts the environmental and technical assessments necessary for the project.

In parallel, EDF Renewables, before submitting a planning application, is consulting with the local population about the project. In addition, this project falls within the framework of the of the British government. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

The development of storage systems in parallel with the various renewable energy production projects is important. Indeed, battery storage offers the flexibility required by National Grid to manage intermittent supply. This intermittency is characteristic of renewable sources such as wind and solar.

Consultations

Batteries are an asset for quickly dealing with network outages. Their ability to respond to changes in electricity supply and demand, helps to reduce the risk of outages .Martin Cole, planning director of EDF Renewables’ Storage and Private Wiring Division, says:

“As more and more of our lives are powered by electricity – from heating to cars – our energy system is changing. Batteries are helping to future-proof the grid and cost-effectively integrate more renewable energy. Generating more of our electricity renewably from local sources will lead to lower bills and greater energy security.”

EDF Renewables is undertaking a public consultation for its Norwich project from November 21 to December 12, 2022. This consultation will be the subject of a planning application in 2023. This, as part of the process, should be submitted to South Norfolk Council.

In the United Kingdom, EDF Renewables has an operating portfolio of 38 renewable energy sites. It includes batteries, onshore and offshore wind turbines, together totaling more than 1GW. In addition, the company has an expanding portfolio with nearly 5GW of projects in planning and development.
