German turbine manufacturer Nordex Group has announced it secured its first order in Ecuador for a wind farm with a total capacity of 112 megawatts. The agreement, concluded with an undisclosed project developer, includes the supply of 19 N149/5.X turbines. These units will be installed in the southern part of the country, with construction scheduled to begin in October 2026.
A wind market still in its infancy
The project will utilise Delta4000 turbines, mounted on tubular steel towers with a hub height of 105 metres. Full commissioning is planned for March 2027. Ecuador currently has only 69 megawatts of installed wind capacity across three projects. The addition of this new facility would raise the national total to 181 megawatts, nearly tripling the country’s current output from this sector.
Targeted support for grid stability
According to information provided by Nordex, the project aims to improve the country’s energy supply security, particularly during the Amazon dry season, when hydropower capacity typically drops. Although the name of the client and the project site have not been disclosed, the facility is expected to play a strategic role in reducing the risk of blackouts.
Nordex expands its reach in Latin America
This order highlights Nordex’s gradual expansion into less developed renewable energy markets across Latin America. The company continues to pursue its strategy of establishing operations in regions heavily reliant on hydroelectricity, where wind power can serve as a key lever for energy diversification. While Nordex’s industrial presence in the region remains limited, this project could pave the way for further commercial deployments.
