Nicaragua’s Ministry of Energy and Mines has launched an international tender for the drilling of deep wells in the geothermal zone of the Cosigüina volcano. The tender is aimed at attracting specialist companies to exploit the region’s geothermal potential, with a submission deadline of August 19, 2024. Proposals must be submitted in person and in Spanish.

Background to the Geothermal Project

The geothermal zone of the Cosigüina volcano is renowned for its energy potential. This project is part of the government’s strategy to diversify the country’s energy sources. In 2020, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) had already financed pre-feasibility studies for this region.
Interested companies are invited to consult the official website of the Ministry of Energy and Mines for details of the call for tenders and the required technical specifications.

Tender Conditions and Requirements

The Ministry of Energy and Mines stipulates that proposals must comply with international geothermal drilling standards. Companies must demonstrate significant experience in deep well drilling and the ability to manage complex projects in demanding technical environments.
Bids must be accompanied by a “Declaration of Maintenance of Offer” and electronic bids will not be accepted. Proposals will be opened in the presence of representatives of the bidding companies on August 19, 2024.

Economic Impact and Opportunities

The development of the Cosigüina geothermal zone is strategic for Nicaragua, offering major investment opportunities in the energy sector. The selected companies will benefit from potentially lucrative contracts, and will help strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
The tender is part of a series of IDB-funded initiatives aimed at improving Nicaragua’s energy capacity. Funds are allocated under loans 3727/BL-NI, 3728/KI-NI, and 3729/OC-NI, as well as non-reimbursable financing GRT/SX-15741-NI, GRT/SX-15742-NI, and GRT/TC-15743-NI.
The tender for geothermal drilling at the Cosigüina volcano represents a major opportunity for companies specializing in renewable energies. The success of this project will depend on the bidders‘ ability to meet the technical requirements and demonstrate their expertise in the field.
