French renewable heat provider Newheat and Chilean company Sunmark Chile have announced the creation of a joint venture named Newheat Latam. The entity aims to deliver solar thermal heat solutions for high-consumption industries, with a particular focus on Chile’s copper mining sector. This move marks Newheat’s first strategic deployment in South America.

The Chilean mining sector seeks cost-effective thermal solutions

The copper industry accounts for approximately 7% of Chile’s national CO2 emissions. In response to growing pressure, several mining companies have committed to reducing their carbon footprint. These industrial processes require large amounts of low- to mid-temperature heat, especially for heap leaching and electrowinning stages.

Solar thermal energy offers a suitable solution, providing stable, local and predictable heat. Northern Chile, with some of the world’s highest solar irradiation, presents optimal conditions for large-scale thermal plant deployment. Land availability near mining sites further reduces logistical constraints and supports economies of scale.

A joint venture backed by experienced specialists

Sunmark Chile, active in the country for over a decade, has contributed to several significant projects, including the 32 MWth Pampa Elvira Solar plant for state-owned mining company CODELCO. It is also involved in two ongoing projects on the BHP-Minera Escondida site, with planned capacities of 40 and 90 MWth. The company brings in-depth knowledge of local regulations and industrial networks.

Since 2015, Newheat has accumulated references across Europe in deploying solar thermal plants, with 7 operational projects totalling 40 MWth, and several others under construction or development. The French firm contributes full value chain capabilities to the joint venture, including engineering, financing, construction, and operations.

Strategic positioning for regional growth

Newheat Latam aims to become a regional reference in renewable heat supply for mining. By combining Sunmark Chile’s technical expertise with Newheat’s integrated structure, the joint venture is well-positioned to design and operate large-scale industrial solutions tailored to local conditions.

This is Newheat’s first joint venture, reflecting its ambition to establish a lasting presence in South America. The Chilean market represents a strategic milestone in the company’s expansion, driven by growing demand for decarbonised thermal solutions in the mining industry.
