Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of Norwegian group Nel ASA, has received a firm purchase order from H2 Energy for the supply of a 2.5 MW containerised proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser, model MC500. The equipment will be installed in a new hydrogen production and refuelling facility commissioned by the Association for Waste Disposal (Verein für Abfallentsorgung, VfA) in Buchs, Switzerland.

A strategic order to fuel the waste collection fleet

The facility will produce hydrogen using locally generated electricity to supply VfA’s fleet of waste collection trucks, as well as for regional industrial applications. The hydrogen produced will be integrated into the Swiss green hydrogen ecosystem, which is already supported by several similar facilities.

This order marks the third purchase of a containerised electrolyser from Nel by H2 Energy. In addition to a previous MC500, H2 Energy has already acquired an MC400 and a smaller C30 unit. The company highlights the reliability of Nel’s technology, which has been producing electrolysers for several years.

A partnership rooted in the Swiss hydrogen sector

Since 2016, H2 Energy has been working with Nel on hydrogen development projects in Switzerland. The first joint project, based on a C30 electrolyser, enabled the establishment of an ecosystem for heavy-duty mobility. The partnership continued with the installation of an MC400, which has been in operation for over 30,000 hours, and an MC500 that has exceeded 12,000 hours. These facilities currently power a network of 18 refuelling stations and a fleet of fuel cell trucks that have travelled over 14 million kilometres.

The new project in Buchs is a continuation of this existing network. It represents a key milestone in the local development of hydrogen production infrastructure for industrial and logistics uses, supported by investments in high-capacity equipment.

Strengthening Nel’s industrial portfolio in Europe

This order strengthens Nel ASA’s industrial presence in Switzerland, a strategic market for the company within the European hydrogen sector. The long-standing partnership with H2 Energy enables Nel to secure repeat projects in a regulatory and logistical environment favourable to renewable hydrogen.

Todd Cartwright, Chief Commercial Officer at Nel, stated that this installation demonstrates the strong relationship between the two entities and confirms H2 Energy’s ability to consistently deliver industrial-scale operational projects.
