Swedish hydrogen technology manufacturer Metacon AB has announced the final signing of a contract with energy company Elektra Power SRL for the delivery of a 7.5-megawatt (MW) electrolysis facility in Romania. The contract, valued at EUR7.1mn ($7.7mn), represents approximately SEK78.1mn based on the current exchange rate.
The agreement, initially communicated on 18 September, has now been formally concluded by both parties after several weeks of negotiation. The electrolyser will be integrated into a broader regional project led by Romania-based Elektra. This project aims to support the development of local hydrogen production infrastructure for industrial applications.
A structuring project in a growing market
This contract marks Metacon’s first significant commercial operation in Romania, a market where investments in green hydrogen are accelerating. According to information released by Metacon, the facility will produce hydrogen via water electrolysis, using electricity to separate hydrogen and oxygen, without direct carbon emissions.
Christer Wikner, Chief Executive Officer and President of Metacon AB, stated that the agreement represents “an important entry into the regional market with a recognised leader.” No further details were provided regarding the delivery or commissioning timeline.
Consolidating a European presence
Headquartered in Stockholm, Metacon develops and markets hydrogen solutions for energy production, storage, and mobility. The signing of this contract with Elektra Power SRL reflects a geographical diversification strategy into emerging Eastern European markets.
The Swedish company continues to expand its commercial portfolio following several pilot projects in Scandinavia and Germany. The Romanian market offers a growth opportunity due to public support for industrial decarbonisation and modernisation of energy networks.
