Swedish company Metacon AB (publ) announced it has concluded the main contract with Motor Oil (Hellas) Corinth Refineries S.A. to deliver an additional 20 megawatt (MW) hydrogen production unit. This latest commitment complements the initial 30 MW agreement, bringing the total electrolytic project capacity to 50 MW. The site is located at Motor Oil’s refinery complex in Agioi Theodoroi, in the Corinth region of Greece.

Local production and modular assembly

The electrolysis units will be partially assembled at Metacon’s facility in Patras, while on-site installation in Corinth will be carried out by Motor Oil under the joint supervision of Metacon and its Chinese technology partner PERIC. Siemens, Metacon’s long-term technology partner, is also contributing to the project. The collaboration aims to deliver an integrated hydrogen production system based on water electrolysis.

Once completed, the facilities are expected to constitute one of the largest electrolysis-based hydrogen production plants in Europe. The majority of components for the 20 MW extension will be delivered in tandem with the initial 30 MW project to streamline production and assembly timelines.

Structuring project for Greece’s industrial sector

Motor Oil’s industrial complex is the largest private facility in Greece and is recognised as one of the most modern refineries in Europe. The group has also outlined national-scale hydrogen ambitions, including a European Union-backed “Hydrogen Valley” initiative and plans for a hydrogen refuelling station network.

This strategic development reinforces industrial engagement in large-scale local hydrogen production. Finalisation of this 50 MW contract represents a significant milestone in Metacon’s technological roadmap and its objective to embed hydrogen production solutions into existing infrastructure across the European continent.

Christer Wikner, Chief Executive Officer and President of Metacon AB, stated: “The 50 MW hydrogen production plant in Corinth will be one of the largest in Europe.”
