The MacIntyre wind farm in Australia is being developed with an extension of Acciona Energía’s Herries Range wind farm.

Doubling of the capacity

MacIntyre will double the capacity of the Herries Range park, bringing the total capacity to 2GW. MacIntyre is already the largest onshore wind project in Australia and in the southern hemisphere. The announcement comes during a visit to the Port of Brisbane by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

The Premier and Cabinet Ministers were inspecting the components of the wind turbines awaiting transport to the MacIntyre Wind Precinct. The site is located 60 kilometers west of Warwick. It is under construction and will house 180 turbines of 5.7MW each.

An important investment

Brett Wickham, Managing Director of ACCIONA Energía in Australia, says:

“Today, we are proud to announce that we have begun development activities for the Herries Range Wind Farm to add an additional 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy to Queensland’s energy mix. With this project, we plan to significantly accelerate the decarbonization of Queensland’s electricity grid.”

In total, this 2GW investment represents a total cost of over $4 billion Australian. It will be able to supply clean energy to the equivalent of 1.4 million homes per year.

The site currently consists of two wind farms: MacIntyre (923 MW), owned by Acciona Energía (70%) and Ark Energy (30%). The second project is the Karara wind farm proposed by the public energy company CleanCo. Acciona Energía is one of the world’s leading developers of renewable energy.
