Logrosán, in the province of Extremadura, Spain, is the site of the construction by ACCIONA Energía of a 49.9MW biomass plant.

A guaranteed price

The biomass plant of Logrosán foresees a production of 376GWh per year. In addition, eIt will reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by 165,000 tons. This figure is equivalent to removing 65.65,000 cars off the road or to plant 300,000 trees

The biomass plant is built 10 kilometers from the urban center of the municipality of Logrosán. The project entrusted by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge comes under the economic regime of renewable energies. The award was made at the third auction.

The project in Logrosán guarantees a sale price for the electricity produced by the plant for 20 years. It received the environmental approval of the Regional Ministry of Ecological Transition and Sustainability of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. In addition, the estimated annual consumption of the plant is 261,000 tons per year of agricultural and forest biomass.

An asset for the local economy

The arrival of this plant represents a real economic advantage for the region. Indeed, the biomass plant stimulates agricultural life and creates jobs. It also stimulates theSocial action programs to promote local development and employment.

Rafael Mateo, CEO of ACCIONA Energía says:

“The new plant in Logrosán is an example of the benefits of biomass, which the Extremadura region has already had the opportunity to experience through the ACCIONA Energía plant in Miajadas. Biomass helps to reduce emissions and, in addition, it has proven to be the technology that creates the most jobs, reactivating rural areas thanks to the direct, indirect and induced jobs generated by the collection and handling of plant waste used as fuel.”

In addition, the biomass plant encourages the cleaning and clearing of the area. As a result, it prevents forest fires, which are increasingly frequent in Extremadura due to heat waves and drought.

The project in Logrosán includes accompanying plans for the preservation and regeneration of flora and fauna. ACCIONA Energía already operates a biomass plant in the Extremadura region since 2010, located in Miajadas. It has a capacity of 15MW and is the first in Europe to use two types of raw materials, grass and wood.
