LibertyStream has signed a memorandum of understanding with Packet Digital to secure a local supply of lithium carbonate for industrial and military battery production, backed by approximately $2.7mn in funding.

LibertyStream Infrastructure Partners Inc. has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Packet Digital to collaborate on the supply of lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃) for US-based battery manufacturing programmes. The initiative aims to strengthen the domestic energy storage value chain through coordinated efforts between LibertyStream’s refining capabilities and Packet Digital’s industrial demand.

Strengthening the US energy storage chain

The agreement includes technical data sharing and joint planning to secure future supply volumes tailored to cell production requirements. LibertyStream, in partnership with Wellspring Hydro, will develop its refining operations to deliver lithium carbonate meeting Packet Digital’s specifications. This collaboration is designed to improve supply reliability for critical materials and reduce reliance on imports.

Packet Digital manufactures advanced batteries for industrial and defence applications. The agreement will allow for greater control over the origin of chemical inputs used in production, with supply sourced from facilities in Texas and North Dakota.

Funding allocated for operational expansion

In parallel with the agreement, LibertyStream has raised approximately CAD3.7mn ($2.7mn) in gross funding through a mix of non-dilutive grants and the exercise of options and warrants by board members and its largest institutional shareholder. The proceeds will support the commissioning of the company’s refining unit in Texas and the ramp-up of operations in North Dakota.

The company expects to achieve commercial-scale lithium carbonate production by late 2025. Output from these facilities will serve industrial and military-grade battery manufacturing, requiring high-quality and reliable material supply.

Building an integrated domestic supply line

The agreement sets out coordination on logistics, processes, and delivery timelines to enhance operational efficiency. Terri Zimmerman, Chief Executive Officer of Packet Digital, stated the partnership supports the development of a national integrated supply chain for critical battery materials. Alex Wylie, President and Chief Executive Officer of LibertyStream, reaffirmed that local lithium carbonate production addresses the specific needs of US-based cell manufacturers.
