Lhyfe takes another step forward with the announcement of the development of its first green hydrogen production plant in Spain. This ambitious project, supported by a €14 million grant from H2 Pioneros, is a testament to Europe’s growing commitment to the energy transition.
Production capacity and project impact
The plant, with a production capacity of 5 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, is scheduled to come on stream in 2026 in the Vallmoll industrial zone (Tarragona). This site will meet the growing demand from local industrial companies, particularly in the chemicals and logistics sectors, to replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen in their production processes.
The European context and Lhyfe’s position
Lhyfe’s initiative is part of a wider European context, where the company already operates one production site and is building seven others. With around 200 employees dedicated exclusively to renewable hydrogen production, Lhyfe is a key player in green hydrogen production, with projects in 11 countries and a pipeline of over 10GW in Europe.
The H2 Pioneros grant and its importance
This project, one of 14 selected in Spain in 2023 from 81 proposals, represents a major milestone for Lhyfe, rewarding its efforts and expertise in producing and delivering green hydrogen to various customers over the past two years. He also underlines the company’s alignment with Spain’s hydrogen strategy, which focuses on the rapid development of a hydrogen infrastructure based on renewable energies.
Lhyfe’s commitment to Spain’s hydrogen strategy
Taia Kronborg, Lhyfe’s Sales Director, expresses her satisfaction at obtaining this grant, seeing it as recognition of Lhyfe’s expertise and a sign of the company’s good orientation in Spain. It reiterates Lhyfe’s commitment to the Spanish hydrogen strategy and welcomes Spain’s focus on the rapid expansion of hydrogen infrastructure.
Implications for industry and transport
This ambitious project will make a significant contribution to supplying competitive green hydrogen to numerous industrial and transport companies in the province of Tarragona. However, it will support Lhyfe’s goal of increasing the penetration of green hydrogen in Spain and other similar industrial processes.
Implementation of the project is subject to obtaining operating and construction permits, as well as financial investment decisions. However, the Lhyfe project is part of a global drive to invest in renewable energies and decarbonize the industrial and transport sectors, illustrating Europe’s growing commitment to a sustainable energy transition.
Lhyfe’s announcement of its new green hydrogen production site in Spain represents a major step forward in Europe’s energy transition. The project also underlines the growing importance of green hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
