The Italian Competition Authority has announced the opening of an investigation into the electric vehicles of manufacturers BYD, Stellantis, Tesla, and Volkswagen. This inquiry aims to examine the information provided to consumers regarding the kilometre range of these vehicles and the potential degradation of battery capacity over time.
Information on vehicle range
According to the official statement, the websites of the four manufacturers provide general, and sometimes contradictory, data on the range of their electric vehicles. The authority highlights the lack of details regarding the factors influencing the claimed maximum mileage and their actual impact on effective range.
Battery warranty and capacity loss
The investigation is also focusing on potential violations of regulations concerning warranty limitations on batteries. The regulator accuses the manufacturers of failing to clearly and comprehensively inform consumers about the reduction in battery capacity resulting from normal vehicle use.
Inspections and manufacturers’ responses
Inspections have been carried out at the Italian headquarters of the four automotive manufacturers concerned. Stellantis confirmed these inspections and stated that it had provided “the necessary answers, information, and documents” as part of the investigation. The group affirmed that it places “customer requirements and satisfaction” at the core of its activities and has committed to fully cooperating with the authority to further explore any significant aspect of the case.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen Italy told AFP that it has “taken note” of the ongoing investigation and assured full cooperation with the relevant authorities. The manufacturer added that it is providing support and all necessary information to ensure a factual and well-founded clarification of the matter.
